Islington Labour Councillors Kaya Comer Schwartz (Junction), Marian Spall (Hillrise), and Dave Poyser (Hillrise), have joined calls by the local community for the Archway Tavern to reopen in 2018.

Cllr David Poyser, said: “The pedestrianisation of the new Navigator Square has been a great success. The pub has always been a major local landmark, but local residents keep asking ‘when will it open?’

“We fully understand that the building is a commercial operation, but local people have waited a very long time for it to be open.

“After a lot of discussion over very many years, we have created pedestrianisation changes that have been very popular – so many local people were keen to join in the voting to name the new square ‘Navigator Square’ after its history as a transport hub.

“The Archway Tavern has been part of the history of the area, and the building is a local icon. We are really proud of the diverse local and community minded businesses in Archway. It would be brilliant to have a well managed Tavern to serve up some 2018 spirit.

“Since the recent opening of the new square, we have had a great launch of the square with Jeremy Corbyn MP, a wonderful Christmas with the Mayor of Islington and hundreds of local families, and the street market there is already a huge success.

“Our New Year wish is that in 2018 the pub serves community spirits.”
