Cally Road Tube

In December 2015, Transport for London (TfL) announced plans to replace the two lifts at Caledonian Road tube station, which would have resulted in the closure of the station for 8 months from March 14  until the end of 2016.

Islington Council opposed the closure and instead proposed that the lifts be replaced one at a time, allowing the station to remain open.

After the Council issued legal proceedings, TfL agreed to withdraw and reconsider its proposals.

But we need to keep the pressure on, so that TfL makes the correct decision.

We the undersigned request that TfL repair one lift at time to keep the station open.

This is the least ambitious construction plan in the history of mankind. Can we please contract the people who built the pyramids to replace the lift. They knew how to get shit done.

Repair one lift at a time, and save people an extra 30+ minutes on their commute by sending them to either Holloway Road, or the very busy King’s Cross, St Pancras Station

This is ridiculous – utterly unnecessary to close the station when stations like Russell Sq & Covent Garden, with far more passengers each day, have managed with one lift at a time. And not only do 10,000 people use Caledonian Road station each week day but when there are matches at Arsenal it’s the only tube station the thousands of spectators can use, since Holloway Road station is closed on match days – what are they supposed to do?

Living between Tufnell Park and Caledonian Road stations, I have really been kicked by these underground closures. The local buses are often overcrowded and competing with traffic makes rush hour-commuting slow and erratic at best. Whilst I understand these works are necessary, we cannot stick with this culture of ‘doing whatever is cheapest’. We must find ways to make updates at underground stations without complete closure where possible, which is certainly an option at Caledonian Road.

One lift at a time would make sense; the closure is going to put enormous pressure on Holloway Road tube and the buses to King’s Cross, as well as causing unnecessary stress to customers. Eight months of misery.
