Cally Road Tube

In December 2015, Transport for London (TfL) announced plans to replace the two lifts at Caledonian Road tube station, which would have resulted in the closure of the station for 8 months from March 14  until the end of 2016.

Islington Council opposed the closure and instead proposed that the lifts be replaced one at a time, allowing the station to remain open.

After the Council issued legal proceedings, TfL agreed to withdraw and reconsider its proposals.

But we need to keep the pressure on, so that TfL makes the correct decision.

We the undersigned request that TfL repair one lift at time to keep the station open.

This will significantly increase my commute and will also become more expensive

I do t see why the work must take so long or why one lift can not be done at one time

This is just another fraud being committed in this city under the guise of improving transport network in London! It is obvious the longer the contractors claim they will fix the problem the more money they get – it is fraud and all good people should resist it! It will also affect businesses around the area, are they TFL so insensitive?!

This is an unacceptable amount of time to repair or even replace 2 elevators. There must be some sort of plan in place for situations such as this. Come on guys really?!?!

The existing lifts were replaced over 30 years ago, the station was kept open during the entire process as two existing vacant lift shafts were utilised. Caledonian Road was built with four shafts. TFL needs to work on the basis of maintaining two operational lifts whilst the new lifts are installed and come up with a Health and Safety Strategy to accommodate the requirement of keeping the station open during the works. Ultimately three or four lifts may be required as the local population has increased over the past 10 years, particularly as many colleges now have their student accommodation in the upper Caledonian Road area connected by station to their central London sites.

There has been no public consultation on any of this and I only found out a few back when talking to a TFL employee dealing with Conservation. Data needs to be produced on the current and projected use of the station to ascertain whether two lifts are indeed adequate.

I’m glad this is being brought up with TFL. Closing Caledonian Road for 8 months is an unfeasibly long time, and will cause more crowding in the already crowded stations of Holloway Rd and Highbury.

I use this station EVERY day at 5:30am and then around 7:30pm. This will seriously disrupt my commute to work every day, especially as Tufnell Park is currently closed too! Please don’t shut the station!! It will disrupt my whole routine so badly!
