Cally Road Tube

In December 2015, Transport for London (TfL) announced plans to replace the two lifts at Caledonian Road tube station, which would have resulted in the closure of the station for 8 months from March 14  until the end of 2016.

Islington Council opposed the closure and instead proposed that the lifts be replaced one at a time, allowing the station to remain open.

After the Council issued legal proceedings, TfL agreed to withdraw and reconsider its proposals.

But we need to keep the pressure on, so that TfL makes the correct decision.

We the undersigned request that TfL repair one lift at time to keep the station open.

I welcome the repairs … But 8 months without a local tube station will make getting to work extremely difficult! Can it not be done in stages?

If Caledonian Road closes, I will have to walk for 25 minutes or get the bus every time I want to get on the tube. It seems totally absurd that it would take 8 months just to replace a couple of lifts.

Earlier comments about accessibility are absolutely to the point. If closure is genuinely the only possibility, TFL must prove it to everyone.

Unacceptable closure time scale.

This is one of the few tube stations that is fully accessible for disabled people, and closure for 8 months suggests a callous disregard for its exceptional importance in that regard. It’s accessibility shouldn’t be exceptional in the first place, but as it is, its closure will have disproportionate impact. Surely it must be possible to either do one lift at a time or do the entire job far quicker….

There is also a petition on change.org with around 1000 signatures – wouldn’t it be better to club together?
