Cally Road Tube

In December 2015, Transport for London (TfL) announced plans to replace the two lifts at Caledonian Road tube station, which would have resulted in the closure of the station for 8 months from March 14  until the end of 2016.

Islington Council opposed the closure and instead proposed that the lifts be replaced one at a time, allowing the station to remain open.

After the Council issued legal proceedings, TfL agreed to withdraw and reconsider its proposals.

But we need to keep the pressure on, so that TfL makes the correct decision.

We the undersigned request that TfL repair one lift at time to keep the station open.

Thank you for your action,

closing Caledonian Road tube station would be a nuisance in my daily journey to work.

Entirely ridiculous and majorly disruptive.

I work in construction and I have never heard of any lift replacement of this scale taking this amount of time. The rule of thumb is:

Offsite Design & Manufacture – 8wk

Onsite Works – assume 2 gangs working concurrently on both lifts

Isolation of Services – 1wk

Removal of Lifts – 2 wk

1wk per level (3m) assume 30m = 10wks

Commissioning & Approvals – 2wks

Contingency – 2wk

Total Onsite Works 17wks

There is no logical reason for the works to take 8 months when the maximum should be circa 4 months. This period would only be logical if the lifts were replaced one at a time in which case I lift should be usable for the duration of works and the station would need not close.

The other factor is that the stairs are operational and therefore this creates another method of access and egress. During the recent lift outage at the station where 1 lift and the stairs were usable, there was never any real issue with the usage of the station.

I would be happy to discuss my comments further if you feel this would assist in the re-programming and methodology of the proposals by TFL..

Caledonian Road station is used by favoured by many residents to travel to and from Heathrow airport with havey luggage due to the limited number of steps in the station.

I use Caledonian Road Tube station every day to travel out to Heathrow Airport to work. I would certainly have to add another hour to my journey time as the bus services to Kings Cross would be inundated with extra travelers during the morning rush hour.

Repair one lift at a time or allow the use of stairs to those who want!

I take the stairs every day and like me so a lot of other people.

Furthermore I take the tube everyday for work and sometimes at the very early hours in the morning. The idea of having to walk all the way to Holloway Road tube at 5.45am does not appeal to me at all and yet I will be forced to do that if Caledonian rd tube will close.

Really not happy…..

This will seriously harm local businesses, including my own. There are two independent coffee shops near the tube; how will they survive?

The remaining transport option will not be able to support the added commuters.
