Cllr Asima Shaikh, Executive Member for Economic Development, explains why it is important to support small businesses in Islington on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year.

Islington has a fantastic range of small businesses, from small high street shops to innovative tech start-ups.

Small Business Saturday (2nd December) reminds us why it is so important to support small businesses in Islington. They make a huge contribution to our economy, employ local people and add character to our communities.

Islington Council is committed to protecting and boosting local businesses in the borough, which is why we have been supporting them to develop exciting ways to encourage people to shop local on Small Business Saturday.

From local businesses on Stroud Green Road hosting treasure trails, to small businesses in Archway taking part in 10 per cent discount Archway Card offer, Islington is clearly full of innovative entrepreneurs.

The Christmas light switch-ons taking place around Islington this week would also not be the same without the dedication and enthusiasm of our small businesses.

The Council is on the side of local businesses. We campaigned alongside them against the Tory Government’s massive hike in business rates bills, which are hitting small businesses. As a result of the 14,250-strong petition we handed into the Treasury earlier this year, the Government was forced to announce a relief scheme. While the funding is far below what is needed, I am pleased the Council is able to provide some relief for the worst affected businesses.

I am thankful to the wonderful small businesses who contribute so much to Islington. I encourage everyone to support their local businesses and shop local, not just at Christmas but throughout the year.
