Islington Labour councillors are supporting the Council’s appeal to landlords to provide accommodation in the borough to Syrian refugees. The appeal will help to transform the lives of Syrian refugee families fleeing conflict.

Islington Council has so far welcomed 10 Syrian families in the borough and has provided them with specialist ongoing support. It will be working with its partners, including Refugee Action, to offer support to landlords, with rent guaranteed by the Council. The Council hopes to offer accommodation to eight more families.

In 2015, Islington became one of the first local councils to welcome vulnerable Syrian refugees. It is working hard to ensure Syrian refugees feel at home in the borough; including by offering health support, English language training and supporting children into local schools. The Council has led calls for the Government to do more to help vulnerable Syrian refugees resettle in the UK.

Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Executive Member for Community Development, says: “The UN estimates that more than 1 million refugees will need resettling in 2018. The Syrian refugees fleeing civil war are currently living in terrible conditions in refugee camps or in precarious accommodation elsewhere. We are determined to do all we can to offer help to Syrian refugees start a new and safe life with their families. For that, we need the help of local people.

“The response to our previous calls for support has been encouraging and demonstrates that local people in Islington are compassionate and caring. I hope that our latest appeal will encourage more landlords to come forward to offer a safe haven for Syrian refugees.”

Offering accommodation to a Syrian refugee family makes a real difference to their lives, as they are given a new home and new start in life.  Landlords who have opened up their doors to refugees have spoken of the positive and rewarding impact it has had on their own lives.

The Council is looking to speak to landlords who have family flats with one, two or more bedrooms. If you have or know of someone who has a suitable property, please contact islingtonlettings@islington.gov.uk

You can also help children living in Syria by making a donation to the UNICEF appeal.
