As part of Islington Labour’s work to support council tenants, the Labour Council is pioneering a groundbreaking new initiative to insulate council homes.
The borough’s Victorian street council properties will benefit from solid wall insulation under Islington Council’s Issyclad programme, the biggest of its kind in Britain.
The works sees an extra layer fixed to the inside of exterior walls to stop heat draining away. It cuts residents’ fuel bills and also helps the environment.
Up to 90 council-owned street properties will be given insulation, which is being delivered with Partners for Islington while work is carried out with the last investment from the Labour Government’s Decent Homes programme.
Cllr Paul Smith, Islington Council’s executive member for environment, said: “We’re determined to improve the lives of Islington’s most disadvantaged people and to tackle fuel poverty.
“This work will cut fuel bills for residents in social housing, many of whom are on low incomes and are counting every penny.
“It will also help the environment and cut carbon emissions because much less energy is being wasted.”
The insulation is expected to save about £200 from each household’s gas bill and to save around a fifth of their home’s carbon dioxide emissions.
