Islington Labour scored a decisive victory in last week's European elections as the Party increased its share of the vote to finish more than nine points ahead of the nearest party.
The results saw Islington Labour finish with almost 30% of the vote, compared to 20.1% for the Greens. The Liberal Democrats, who run Islington Council, finished in third place as their share of the vote declined by 2.4 points to 19.2%.
The vote came after Islington Labour succeeded in passing its budget amendment introducing universal free school meals for all under 11s, a tax discount for over 65s and free gym classes for young people.
"People in our borough gave a strong endorsement for Islington Labour in last week's European elections.
"I am glad that local people agree that we are on their side as we campaign for affordable housing, for more support for working families and a helping hand in tough economic times. I am particularly pleased to get this support after our budget victory for free school meals for all under 11s, a council tax discount for over 65s and free leisure classes for young people.
"The result was also a serious rejection of the Liberal Democrats, who crashed to third place as their support continues to collapse in Islington. Our borough needs a new direction and ordinary people need a voice in the Town Hall. After these results, the local elections can't come soon enough for Islington."
