Islington’s Labour Council has agreed a new in-house contract for council
building cleaners to pay the London Living Wage.
The new service will be provided at no additional cost and will see some of the Council’s lowest paid workers paid the living wage – currently £7.85.
There are currently 150 cleaners employed by Islington’s contractor, around half of them agency staff. Under the new contract, all of the cleaners will be paid the living wage.
Councillor Catherine West, Leader of Islington Council, said: “It is a pleasure to know that, for no extra cost to the tax payer, Islington Council’s cleaning staff will be paid a living wage.
“Our borough has some of the most deprived communities in the country and that is why we are determined to play our part in raising people’s living standards.”
