Our Homes Not For Sale

Our Homes Not for Sale

All people deserve to feel secure in their homes.

The Tory Government wants to end the security Council tenants currently enjoy and to sell off council homes.

The Tories’ new law will:

  • Ban new lifetime tenancies, ending the security that Islington Council tenants are currently offered.
  • Force the Council to sell hundreds of homes each year, making it even harder for local people to find an affordable home in Islington.

We, the undersigned, call for the Tory Government to stop the planned ban on lifetime tenancies and the forced sale of council homes.

Social housing is vital to maintain a fully diverse and lively community. Security of tenure MUST be maintained in order for communities to grow and thrive. Council housing should NOT be sold off.

The plan to end secure secure tenancy is an act of sheer gentrification and nothing else. the government can dress it up, hide behind terms policies and recommendations but it is sheer classic and gentrification at its Tory finest. This act will see the families displaced, education inturupted and people marginalised because of their income rather than dealing with the true issues like ill gained social housing, buying to rent, lack of housing regeneration, i.e substantial building of new Islington homes instead of majority private sale develolments with a few allocated social housing properties, this is not a solution but a contribution to the spiral in the lack of affordable homes. Parts of Islington have been laid waste and underdeveloped for years but it is by no means a Coincidence with the kings cross development and other regenerations in the borough that areas a being primed for private rentals that only a certain sector of the populations can afford and maintain any semblance or day to day life and push out others, namely hard working current social tenants. Lack of true investment in social housing is not a new problem, rather one which is imploding now as it has been ignored for so long with no future foresight. Implementing set term tenancy will only set another trigger in the minefield that under investment and lack of foresight has already created. The government cannot be allowed to create additional housing crisis by selling of homes in desirable boroughs for mass profit.

It is wrong to sell off properties from the low working class to sell to the rich

government house building is cheaper than market rents payable by local authorities to conform with their responsibilities to a lower income key worker and statutory vulnerable client base

Our homes are not for sale. I think a home should be what is is meant for not the other way round. A home should be secure and sure.
