Our Homes Not for Sale

All people deserve to feel secure in their homes.

The Tory Government wants to end the security Council tenants currently enjoy and to sell off council homes.

The Tories’ new law will:

  • Ban new lifetime tenancies, ending the security that Islington Council tenants are currently offered.
  • Force the Council to sell hundreds of homes each year, making it even harder for local people to find an affordable home in Islington.

We, the undersigned, call for the Tory Government to stop the planned ban on lifetime tenancies and the forced sale of council homes.

This is a destructive process which should be stopped; profitting from our parents’

forethought for a quick buck.

By selling off council houses and having no controls for private renting more and more families will be homeless. This is not just cruel it’s economically inefficient.

Housing is a sore issue in London. The lack of affordable? social housing is having an impact on communities. So mush money is spent on housing benefit for privately rented accommodation due to shortages. This is only a short term solution that’s is costly.

In the long term, we need more social housing that is affordable in order to keep at retain cohesive communities. It will work out cheaper too. There is a very negative effect on lack of social housing. There is a shortage of Key workers because they have been priced out. The knock on effect, affects all public services e.g. NHS, education, street cleaning, transport etc. What happened to ‘prevention is better than curing’?.

This iniquitous policy underlines that Tory leadership are actually jealous of what little the poorest of us have.
