Our Homes Not for Sale

All people deserve to feel secure in their homes.

The Tory Government wants to end the security Council tenants currently enjoy and to sell off council homes.

The Tories’ new law will:

  • Ban new lifetime tenancies, ending the security that Islington Council tenants are currently offered.
  • Force the Council to sell hundreds of homes each year, making it even harder for local people to find an affordable home in Islington.

We, the undersigned, call for the Tory Government to stop the planned ban on lifetime tenancies and the forced sale of council homes.

This tax is designed to keep council estates and neighborhoods in poverty. If people work hard and earn over 40k their disposable income will be spent in the community. If you penalise them they’ll look to move elsewhere with lower rent or limit themselves to earning below the threshold. 40k is not a large amount of money in London. If these households have children they are already harmed by child benefits cuts and child tax credit cuts. People who earn a little more then the threshold would probably buy their council homes reduces housing stock.

I have a relatively low income for the area I live in. Living in central London on a lower rent has allowed me, as a single parent to always work – in social care and support vulnerable people. I have been able to bring my daughter up with a positive work ethic and become a citizen who can contribute to her society. The threat of loosing our home and jobs, because of the insane housing policies is always an additional worry

I have been trying to get social housing since 2004 and I’m still not successful after long 12 years of being moved around here to there. The authority have deceived me into private renting path, It feels like I will never be permanently housed.

If normal people are priced out of Islington, it would be a tragedy.
