Our Homes Not for Sale

All people deserve to feel secure in their homes.

The Tory Government wants to end the security Council tenants currently enjoy and to sell off council homes.

The Tories’ new law will:

  • Ban new lifetime tenancies, ending the security that Islington Council tenants are currently offered.
  • Force the Council to sell hundreds of homes each year, making it even harder for local people to find an affordable home in Islington.

We, the undersigned, call for the Tory Government to stop the planned ban on lifetime tenancies and the forced sale of council homes.

It is time to realise that a stable, secure home is the basis for being an active member of society. Just today the New Policy Institute have produced a report on the 7 million people living in poverty, despite being part of a working family. This level of deprivation is increasingly linked to the high cost and insecurity of private rented accommodation. Local councils should be allowed to develop resources to build an inclusive society, not have all their collective assets stripped before they can be used for local people.

Grrrr, F—-ing Tories, they continue putting the squeeze on hard working people and our Labour Councils. Most of us will never be able to afford to buy our own house so a council property is our only affordable option. If the council are forced to sell off their housing stock to a bunch of greedy Tory profiteers what will happen to all the people on housing waiting lists? Roll on 2020 when we will at last have a chance to kick the Tories out of office. The sooner the better.

Why should the people living in Council homes not have the same security for their families as others? It isn’t logical – your home is your home.
