By Cllr Alice Perry, Labour’s New Councillor for St Peters
Last Thursday I was proud and privileged to be elected to represent the ward of St Peter’s on Islington Council. The Conservative Mayor of London lives in St Peter’s and throughout the campaign one issue dominated above all others – the Mayor’s decision to cut the number of London’s police officers. These are the wrong cuts at the wrong time.
The choice was simple for voters – did they support the Tory Mayor’s police cuts or Labour’s commitment to protect frontline policing? Their decision was an overwhelming 15% swing to Labour.
It is the Mayor of London who has the power to set the budget of the Metropolitan Police Authority, and his own budget document, produced six months before his Tory friend David Cameron was even elected, showed that over the three years to 2012-13 he planned to take over 450 police officers off our streets.
The voter’s of St Peter’s have sent a clear message to the Mayor, but this is the beginning, not the end, of our campaign to save our local police sergeants.
