A new, expanded street cleaning service has been announced by Islington Labour-run Islington Council.

To help tackle litter and to keep local streets clean, the street cleansing services will now clean all streets in the borough every day, Monday to Friday. Main roads will continue to receive a 7 day-a-week service.

The new service, starting soon, will see street sweepers given their own ‘beats’, and includes a cleansing visit after refuse crews have collected recycling and household waste.

The Council will also introduce three new rapid-response crews to react swiftly to reports of fly-tipping, and the graffiti removal crew will be expanded to three teams, as well as two new pavement pressure washers, that will help keep the main roads clean.

Cllr Claudia Webbe, Executive Member for Environment & Transport, said: “Islington is a wonderful and busy borough, and we want to keep it looking its best at all times. I am delighted that we have been able to remodel the service to ensure residential streets are being cleaned much more regularly.

“Despite ongoing massive cuts by the Tory Government – which will see Islington Council lose 70 per cent of its core central government funding between 2010 and 2020 – Islington Labour is committed to protecting frontline services, like street cleaning and weekly bin collections.”

Street sweepers will also have mobile devices to report fly-tips and other problems at the touch of a button in real-time.

The new service will also help reduce emissions and air pollution, with fewer vehicles needed overall for the new operations. New refuse and recycling trucks and a street sweeping vehicle, that run on compressed natural gas, will also be tested as the Council continues to remove diesel and petrol heavy vehicles from its fleet.
