Islington Council hit a major milestone this month by launching its 10th School Street, helping to deliver on another Islington Labour manifesto pledge to clean up the air we breathe.

The pioneering initiative cuts traffic outside schools, at drop-off and pick-up times, helping to reduce pollution, make our roads safer and encourage more children and young people to cycle and walk.

Following a consultation, widely supported by teachers, parents and carers, Winton Primary School became the 10th school to launch a School Street, a little more than six months after Islington’s first school street was opened.

Cllr Claudia Webbe, Executive member for Environment and Transport, said:

“Islington Labour is committed to helping more people walk and cycle, especially our children and young people. Islington’s School Streets cut traffic outside schools, reducing pollution and improving road safety, making it much easier for children and young people to walk, bike or even scoot to school.

“It’s fantastic to launch our 10th School Street at Winton Primary School, which has strong backing from parents and carers.  Children are especially vulnerable to air pollution and we’re determined to take action to create a safer and healthier environment at the school gates.”

As part of Islington Labour’s on-going work to create a healthier borough for all, we are committed to launching more school street schemes and similar measures to cut traffic outside our schools.
