St George’s ward councillor, Cllr Kat Fletcher, has announced that she will be standing down as a councillor.

Cllr Fletcher was first elected in a by-election in March 2013, securing an almost 40% increase in Islington Labour’s share of the vote, and was re-elected in 2014 and 2018.

In her time on the Council, Cllr Fletcher served as Mayor of Islington in 2016-17, using her mayoral year to support The Ben Kinsella Trust. Cllr Fletcher also served as Vice-Chair of the Council’s Planning Committee.

Cllr Kat Fletcher said:

“It’s been an honour to have served the people of St George’s ward for the last 6 years, and I will cherish the memories I’ve made as a local councillor. From taking on private developers to secure more genuinely affordable homes, to serving as the Mayor of Islington and helping local people with the challenges they face; it’s certainly been an interesting job.

“However, the time is right for me to step aside and allow someone else to take-up the reigns as the new councillor for St George’s ward. I will be giving my full support to Islington Labour’s candidate at the upcoming by-election to help continue the work the Council is doing to make the borough a fairer place for all.”

Cllr Richard Watts, Leader of Islington Council, said:

“Kat has been an outstanding champion for her community and we will miss her being on the Council greatly. As Mayor, she brought new energy and enthusiasm to the role, and in always standing up for her local residents she has been determined and very effective. I wish Kat all the best.”

A by-election for the vacant seat will be held on the same day as the General Election (12th December).

Further details of the by-election timetable will be announced by Islington Council in due course.
