The Tory cost of living crisis is having a real impact on people in Islington.

But with inflation at its highest level in 41 years, wages stagnating and living standards projected to fall by 7% over the next two years, the Tory Government has so far failed to offer the vital support people need.

After last week’s disappointing Autumn Statement, Islington Labour councillors have delivered a letter to Downing Street calling on the Government to take action on the things that people desperately need.

In the letter (below), the councillors have called on the Government to extend support on schools, welfare and wages.

On schools, the letter calls on the Government to extend Islington’s existing free school meals offer by rolling them out nationwide, for all young people up to the age of 18, so that single child in the country has access to at least one warm, nutritious meal every day.

On welfare, Islington Labour are calling on the Government to remove the benefit cap so that people get the support they need and are entitled to.

On wages, councillors are demanding the implementation of the real London Living Wage, to ensure working people are paid enough to live on.

Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Leader of Islington’s Labour-run Council, said:

“Local people are really struggling right now. Our council is doing all we can – offering universal free school meals, introducing Warm Community Spaces, making payments to people in crisis, and much more.

“But there’s only so much we can do. The Tory Government’s announcement last week didn’t touch the sides of what people need so that’s why we have written to the Prime Minister today calling for more help for schools, welfare and wages. Now we need action.”

Now we need you to join the campaign. Click here to sign our petition and add your voice to the call for help on Schools, Welfare and Wages. We’ll only win, if you we do it together.
