Councillor Rowena Champion

Rowena was elected as a councillor for Barnsbury ward in 2016, and re-elected in 2018. Rowena has been an active member of her trade union, Unite, for over 20 years. Both before and after becoming a councillor, she has been involved in community initiatives including the regeneration of Barnard Park. Rowena is Chair of Islington Council’s Policy & Performance Scrutiny Committee, and the Environment and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee.

Councillor Jilani Chowdhury 

Jilani has represented Barnsbury ward since 2006, moved to Islington in 1992, and is raising his three children in the borough. Before moving to the UK, Jilani started in politics as a student and fought against military rule in Bangladesh. He served as the General Secretary of the Civil Service Association of Bangladesh, standing up for the rights of trade unions and employees. Jilani currently works in the voluntary and housing sector for older people. From 2012-2013 Jilani served as the first Bangladeshi mayor of Islington, and in his spare time he enjoys spending time with family, watching football and cricket and promoting multicultural activities in London.

Councillor Mouna Hamitouche 

Mouna was the first Algerian-born woman councillor in the UK when she was elected to represent Barnsbury ward in 2006. Mouna moved to Islington in the 1990s and in 2010 became the first Algerian-born Mayor in the UK, serving as Mayor of Islington from 2010-11. In 2012 Mouna was awarded an MBE for services to the community and local government.
