Cally Road Tube

In December 2015, Transport for London (TfL) announced plans to replace the two lifts at Caledonian Road tube station, which would have resulted in the closure of the station for 8 months from March 14  until the end of 2016.

Islington Council opposed the closure and instead proposed that the lifts be replaced one at a time, allowing the station to remain open.

After the Council issued legal proceedings, TfL agreed to withdraw and reconsider its proposals.

But we need to keep the pressure on, so that TfL makes the correct decision.

Japanese can take 24 hours to get it done, why it needs 8 months for the upgrading the Lift .

I see no reason to close the entire station. It will lead to massive disruption for months. There should at least be an adequate compensation scheme in place to compensate the local residents for this disruption.

I work very close to Caledonian Road station and it’s closure would seriously affect out company’s ability to operate. There are two disused lift shafts– can these not be refitted whilst the existing shafts remain in service?

There is a huge impact, by closing the tube station for this time, on all the businesses around. Therefore I suggest other options to be considered that do not involve the station being close for that long time, or actually not being closed at all fixing the lifts at different times of the year.

Thank you,

We are a busy architectural practice located opposite the Caledonian Road tube station and this will affect our clients ability to easily get to our offices. It will also affect our business in that it will take us longer to get to meetings and site visits

This move will affect our business for most of next year. Our clients are already telling us that they will no longer attend meetings in our office, so we will have to make long journeys elsewhere, taking up time and affecting our income. Fifteen people employed by this office will take longer to get to work, get to meetings and get home again. There is a better way of managing this situation, such as phasing the lift renewal. Please reconsider.

We run a small architectural firm near Caledonian Road tube. The tube closure will have a serious impact on our business with many of our clients already refusing to attend meetings at our offices if it goes ahead. It will also lead to loss of business due to increased travel times for our staff when visiting clients or attending meetings. We would like to see alternative proposals to lessen the impact of the work on our business.

My business supporting people on the Autistic Spectrum is based at Caledonian Road. Closing this station would cause added anxiety and extra travel time for those who struggle with travel and could stop some from accessing a service they truly need.

We live opposite. We have done for a year. This is a main reason for buying our property. We’re two girls who work long hours and we wanted to be right by a tube for commuting.

As I and many other people rely on the tube to travel to and from work daily, this would cause untold disruption. I do not think its unreasonable to work on one lift at a time (like they have at covent garden) and request those that are able to use the stairs. 8 months is far too long. Also I can’t understand why it would take a whole 8 months to replace two lifts??? maybe thats the main issue and TFL should employ more efficient contractors to complete the works.

When Arsenal play then Holloway Tube gets closed due to overcrowding. So now 2 stations in a row will be closed on match days, what a joke.
