Standing up for Islington

Islington is one community that is home to people of all backgrounds, including around 30,000 people from countries in the European Union. They are our friends, family and neighbours. They make a huge contribution to our vibrant and diverse community, and many work in vital jobs that support our daily life, such as in the NHS.

Our friends, family and neighbours, who are an essential part of our community, are being used by the Tory Government as bargaining chips in the Brexit negotiations.

We, the undersigned, call for the Tory Government to:

• Immediately guarantee the full rights of all EU citizens currently living in Islington
• Stop using our friends, family and neighbours as bargaining chips in the Brexit negotiations
• Guarantee that EU citizens’ rights will not be affected in the event of no Brexit deal being agreed

The uncertainty faced by EU citizens settled with jobs and families here is indefensible.

I am very passionate Remainer, and am appalled at the way in which the government is handling the Brexit situation. This was a very marginal result which xenophobes have taken as permission to behave outrageously towards all people who they deem to be “not one of us”. OF COURSE the government should be reassuring our EU residents that we want/need them. The way things are going, I (and thousands like me) are truly filled with despair.

I am an EU citizen and I can confirm that the sense of uncertainty Brexit is putting on us is unbearable. I have never experience such a level of anxiety. I have chosen the UK as my home and It is a horrible sensation to feel rejected and with your rights in jeopardy. Everybody I speak with tells me that it is not true that the UK is rejecting EU citizens, but unfortunately the action of this government, and also the ambiguity of the opposition, leave us in the dark with little hope. I therefore really welcome this petition promoted by my party.

The government must guarantee the full rights of all EU citizens currently living in Islington now, not use them as bargaining chips in the Brexit negotiations.

The government should ignore anti-immigrant opinion and not disrupt people’s lives unnecessarily.

EU or dual nationality people are being charged hundreds of pounds to apply for UK citizenship, an ignoble way for the government to make money out of the Brexit mess
