Gulcin Ozdemir has been elected as the new Islington Labour councillor for St George’s ward.

Born and bred in Islington, local campaigner Gulcin was elected today, receiving over 45% of the vote in a by-election held on the same day as the General Election.

As a professional advocate for people living in social housing, Gulcin is rooted in her community and understands the priorities and challenges local people face.

Previously, Gulcin was the Chair of the Parents Association at Christ the King Primary School, helping to organise fundraising drives to raise money for school trips, and is actively involved in her daughter’s primary school, which Gulcin also attended as a child.

Gulcin first became involved in campaigning when the Whittington Hospital was at risk of losing its maternity and A&E services – a cause close to her heart, as both she and her daughter were born at the Whittington.

Cllr Gulcin Ozdemir, said:

“I am honoured to have been elected and to be given the opportunity to represent my community and to make a positive impact on the lives of local people.

“I will represent the needs and concerns of all local people, but especially those people who don’t always have a platform where their voice is consistently heard.

“My top priorities will be improving community safety, ensuring we secure as many genuinely affordable homes for local people on the former Holloway Prison site and being there to help people when they need my support.”
