Investing £10 million for council homes fit for the future

Islington Labour continues to deliver on our manifesto pledge in delivering decent homes for all.

Last month, the Labour-run Council announced its £10 million Thriving Neighbourhoods investment programme that gives local people the chance to shape the transformation of shared spaces on estates across the borough.

Through the programme, residents will be able to suggest changes and improvements in their area, with the council funding and implementing the approved projects.

The three-year programme is part of our Labour-run Council’s efforts to ensure everyone in the borough has a safe, secure, decent place to call home, and supports the council’s drive to allow people make decisions about their local area.

Thriving Neighbourhoods, which contributes to the council’s mission to create a more equal borough, will allow local people to put forward their ideas for improving shared spaces on estates. These might include:

  • Bike storage facilities
  • Improved play facilities, such as equipment for children with disabilities
  • New and improved recycling bins, with disabled access
  • Outdoor gyms
  • New outdoor seating areas where communities can come together
  • Improved landscaping to make estates more attractive and environmentally-friendly
  • Improved security
  • Community centre (estate based) improvements
  • And more…

An online form for local people and groups to submit their Thriving Neighbourhoods ideas is currently live and will close on Monday, 31st October.  If there are multiple improvements you wish to suggest, these can also be sent via the Thriving Neighbourhoods team email on, thrivingneighbourhoods@islington.gov.uk.

The improvements don’t stop there. In the Local Elections 2022 manifesto, we committed to ensuring all estates in the borough have access to high speed, cheap broadband and we are proud to say work is underway to deliver this.

Our Labour Council is working with two broadband providers to roll out full-fibre broadband across Islington’s estates and other council homes, bringing more residents the benefits of fast internet access.

The providers – Hyperoptic and Community Fibre – have begun installation work, with the aim that the project will deliver a full-fibre connection to at least 90% of council homes within three years.

Cllr Una O’Halloran, Executive Member for Homes and Communities, said: “Everyone in our borough deserves a place to call home that is decent, secure and genuinely affordable. I am proud to say this Labour Council is implementing our manifesto, investing in our homes and neighbourhoods.”

“Through Thriving Neighbourhoods, we’re investing £10 million in improving shared spaces across our borough, to empower local people to make a positive difference and feel proud of where they live.  If you feel that your estate playground could benefit from a revamp, that your community needs more bike parking and storage, or that your recycling facilities need an upgrade, then this is your opportunity to get involved and let us know.”

“Fast, reliable internet is also essential in our increasingly digital world and better broadband for council homes is an important part of our work to make Islington a more equal borough.

“We are bringing the benefit of superfast broadband to people living on our estates and in our council homes. We are pleased that these broadband partnerships will create apprenticeships and job opportunities in the borough.”
