Local campaigner Ollie Steadman has been selected as Islington Labour’s candidate to contest the Hillrise by-election on Thursday 2nd May.

Ollie is a local private renter who works in campaigns for a national mental health charity. He has fought alongside Islington Labour colleagues to save the number 4 bus and campaign for step free access at Crouch Hill station, as well as leading on the recent campaign to protect Whittington’s maternity unit.

The by-election has been called to elect a new councillor for Hillrise Ward after Cllr Dave Poyser decided to stand down.

Dave has been a councillor in Hillrise since 2014 and has been a vital part of Islington’s Labour Group over the past decade.

Ollie Steadman, Islington Labour’s candidate for the Hillrise by-election, said:

“I’m incredibly proud to have been selected to be Islington Labour’s candidate for the Hillrise by-election. I am passionate about making Islington a more equal place, lobbying for better support for people struggling with their mental health and making things fairer for private renters.

“I would also like to say thank you to Dave Poyser for everything he has done for Hillrise Ward and I hope I can continue his legacy.”

Dave Poyser, former Islington Labour councillor for Hillrise, said:

“It has been an honour to represent Hillrise on Islington Council since 2014. I am proud of everything we have achieved as a Council in that time, despite the impact of Tory cuts to our budgets. I am personally pleased to have played a key role in reducing the environment impact of the Council’s pension scheme, alongside colleagues.

“!I would like to wish Ollie Steadman the best of luck in the by-election and I’m sure his hard work and charm will be brilliant for the Ward and his passion for championing mental health will be great for the Council. I will be campaigning to ensure Ollie is the next Hillrise Labour councillor.”
