Investing in Islington's Estates

Islington’s Labour-run Council is committed to delivering on the priorities of local people.

The Thriving Neighbourhoods programme was first launched in 2022, and allows Islington’s residents to help shape the transformation of the borough’s housing estates through £10 million of investment.

Over the last three years the programme has seen the Council Invest in projects such as:

  • new and improved cycle storage across the borough
  • landscape improvement on Harvist, Whitecross and Caledonian estates
  • upgraded play areas in Highbury, Clerkenwell, and Tollington
  • resurfaced Burder Close in Mildmay
  • Installed new lighting in various locations across the borough, including in Tollington in Elaine and Stubbs Houses to make the area safer

More than 200 projects were approved in the first round of funding, as the Labour-run Council works to make Islington a cleaner, greener, more child friendly and better place to live.

Now, the programme is opening up again, inviting local people to offer suggestions for where their estates can be improved.

Councillor Una O’Halloran, Executive Member for Homes and Communities said: “Islington’s housing estates are the centre of lots of our communities. This is a fantastic opportunity to make your estate more enjoyable to live on, by adding new play areas for children, extra plants and so much more.

“I am proud that Labour is implementing our manifesto commitments by investing in Islington’s homes and neighbourhoods. The Thriving Neighbourhoods programme is an essential part of giving residents a say in their area and empowering local people to make a difference.”

Residents can participate by submitting their suggestions for the second round of the programme. The application process is straightforward, with a simple online form available from today until 11 February 2024. The Thriving Neighbourhoods suggestion form is found on the Islington Council website. After all the suggestions are considered, the successful projects will be announced in May 2024.
