Islington’s Labour-run Council is determined to create greener streets for local people, tackling the climate emergency in the process.

These efforts have once again been recognised with Islington ranking as the best-performing inner-London borough in a city-wide report for the third year in a row.

As a Labour-led local authority we are on a mission to reimagine the borough’s streets to make them more welcoming and to tackle climate change. This is why we have introduced seven low-traffic neighbourhoods, 35 new school streets, and a network of cycleways, all as part of efforts to make it easier for residents to walk, cycle, and wheel. The changes have contributed to a borough-wide improvement in air quality. The Healthy Streets Scorecard, which ranks boroughs based on the action taken to create healthier streets, place Islington as its highest scoring borough for the third year in a row (excluding the City of London).

The scorecard also found that Islington was the best-performing borough for School Streets, which are present at 51% of the borough’s schools, and Islington was found to have the lowest proportion of car ownership in London, with 32 cars per 100 households.

The Council’s efforts to create a cleaner, greener, healthier borough continue with plans for Liveable Neighbourhoods to cover 70% of the borough, more school streets and protected cycle lanes.

Cllr Rowena Champion, Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport said that “As an council, we are clear that we need to tackle the climate emergency. Ensuring that Islington’s streets are safe, green and welcoming spaces for people to use is at the heart of our strategy to encourage active travel. I’m delighted that the Healthy Streets Scorecard has recognised this.

“However, there is still a lot further to go which is why we are introducing a network of Liveable Neighbourhoods, expanding our school streets scheme, working on making every pavement fully accessible, and creating new cycle routes”.
